How to Play Blackjack

A quick, beginner-friendly guide for Blackjack With Strategy

Objective

Get a hand total closer to 21 than the dealer without going over.

Card Values

  • 2–10 = face value
  • J, Q, K = 10 points
  • Ace (A) = 1 or 11 (whichever helps you more)

How the Game Starts

  1. You and the dealer are each dealt two cards
  2. One dealer card is face up, the other is face down.
  3. Typically is it 1 card to player(s) first, then 1 card to dealer. Repeated - second card to player(s) then finally second *faced down* card to dealer.

Your Turn (Actions)

  • Hit – Take another card.
  • Stand – Keep your current total.
  • Double Down – Double your bet, take one card, then stand. In this game it is done automatically when you press Double.
  • Split – If your first two cards are the same value, you can split into two hands and play each separately. this means you have to place the original bet down again to split the hands. (each hand has the same bet) in this game it is done automatically when you press split.

Splitting Aces

  • If you start with two Aces, you can split them into two separate hands.
  • Each Ace becomes the first card in its own hand, and you place an extra bet equal to your original bet.

In Most Blackjack Games

  • You only get one additional card per split Ace. no hitting again.
  • If that card makes 21, it counts as 21 but not a blackjack, because it is a split hand.

In This Game

  • You can toggle a setting to allow or disallow splitting Aces.
  • If OFF: you cannot split Aces.
  • If ON: you can split Aces, and one card is dealt to each hand.

When You Bust

If your total goes over 21, you lose automatically.

Dealer's Turn

  • The dealer flips their hidden card.
  • The dealer must hit until 17+. In this game, you can adjust if the dealer should stand or hit on a soft 17 in the settings.

Winning

  • If your total is higher than the dealer's without going over 21, you win.
  • If the dealer busts and you didn't, you win.
  • A tie (same total) is a Push meaning you keep your bet.

What Counts as a Blackjack

Blackjack is only when your first two cards total exactly 21 (Ace + a 10-value card).

Important: A total of 21 made from three or more cards is still a great hand, but it is not a blackjack and doesn't get the blackjack payout.

Insurance (What it is & when it shows)

  • If the dealer's face up card is an Ace, the game offers Insurance.
  • Insurance is a side bet that the dealer's hidden card is a 10-value card (meaning they have blackjack). If you think the dealer has a Blackjack you accept insurance (in this game it is 'Yes'), if you think the dealer does NOT have a Blackjack you decline (in this game it is 'No').
  • Insurance costs half your original bet.
  • If you selected 'Yes' and the dealer has blackjack, insurance pays 2:1 meaning you break even by getting the money you bet, back.
  • If you selected 'Yes' and the dealer does not have blackjack, you lose the insurance bet and the round continues normally.
  • If you selected 'No' and the dealer does not have blackjack, the round continues normally.
  • If you selected 'No' and the dealer has blackjack, the round ends and you lose your bet.
Tip: Many players skip insurance unless they are counting cards. it's usually not in your favor long-term.
